What qualities make a good teacher? I ask this question when I interview at different schools. It gives me an idea about the qualities that that school likes to see in their teachers. It also tells me about the personality of that school and the type of difference, if any, that I may make if I teach there.
I think the most important quality to have is to be teachable. Good teachers have the ability to learn from other teachers and to learn from their students.
Improvise and be able to teach to the level of your class. I use a story called What’s Best For Julio to teach writing. I use it for my intermediate students. While the vocabulary is a bit challenging for my beginner students, I thought the story would resonate with them. I have to teach the story differently, but it works.
Be yourself! That is the most important quality. You can learn from other teachers, but you need to take those lessons and adapt them to your style.
