Civility, Is It Worth Losing?

Is civility worth losing in the facade of I’m entitled to my rights (without regard to others’ rights)? Have you driven lately or tried to cross a street? Political┬ádiscourse? It’s all about my rights and who cares about your rights. A former philosophy professor of mine stated it perfectly, “Everyone has a right to their opinions. However, it is not always in your best interest to state it.” We have too many opinions and too few ideas never mind solutions.

People lose their tempers over ridiculous, meaningless things. I’ve seen people become┬ábelligerent in coffee shops when their coffee is not made to order. Many times, the coffee shop employees are just as belligerent. It’s ridiculous!

Many neighborhoods are just groups of people who happen to live on the same street. ┬áSome say it is just a sign of the times, it’s not worth losing any sleep over. I think it is very much worth being concerned about.

Politicians talk about family values. Family values are very important. Community values and respecting others are just as important. We’ve become a divided society by choice. Regardless of political parties and beliefs, we need civility. A new generation of us against them will eventually result in a nation of none.
